Agartala: Two individuals were apprehended by Tripura Police in the early hours of Wednesday for attempting to smuggle five rare species of turtles and tortoises near the Tripura-Mizoram border.

The incident was reported in Jampui hill, located in the North District of Tripura, which shares an interstate border with Mizoram.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team from the Kanchanpur police station team conducted a raid on the Jampui-Kanchanpur 44A-National Highway.

The operation resulted in the discovery of 2 large sea turtles and 3 tortoises being transported illegally through the Mizoram border.

The arrested individuals, identified as Chandaram Reang and Khachuk Reang, both permanent residents of the Bru refugee camp in Kanchanpur of the North District, are now in custody.

It was not exactly known where the creatures were being taken.

The police have begun an investigation in connection with the incident.
