Police on Monday arrested a youth on charges of raping an 8-year-old child at Bishalgarh in Tripura’s Sepahijala district.

The incident took place at KK Nagar Gram Panchayat area in Bishalgarh.

The arrested youth, identified as Sajal Bhowmik, is a neighbour of the rape victim.

According to sources, after learning about the incident from the child, her mother rushed to the Bishalgarh women’s police station on Sunday night and lodged a complaint seeking action from the police.

Immediately after receiving the complaint, a team from Bishalgarh women’s police station arrested the rapist.

The mother of the victim said her daughter went for fishing in river near the house of the accused, Sajal Bhowmik on Saturday afternoon.

Sajal called the child to his home and raped her, as revealed by the victim’s mother.

The mother informed that the accused handed over a note of Rs 20 to the child for buying chocolate when she returned to her home.

The child did not reveal anything when she returned home out of fear.

But on Sunday night, when the child suddenly began to squirm and was in excruciating pain, her mother began to put pressure on her.

She then started crying and revealed everything before her mother.

“The victim’s mother, without wasting any time, rushed to the police station and lodged an FIR, on the basis of which the police arrested the accused,” sources said.
