Agartala: Tripura Police have taken suo motu cognisance of the violent clash between two groups at the Katal Dighir Par area in Kailashahar and registered a case, Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar said on Saturday, asserting that those involved would not be spared.

Responding to queries on the incident, the DGP said the violence erupted suddenly following a confrontation between two groups, leading to a rapid deterioration of the law and order situation. Police intervened promptly to prevent further escalation as tensions spread across the area.

The DGP said police were compelled to resort to a lathi charge and fire blank rounds in the air to disperse the crowd and restore order. He added that such measures were taken as a last resort to ensure public safety and normalcy.

He said legal action had been initiated and a detailed investigation was under way. All those involved in the violence were being identified and strict action would be taken in accordance with the law, irrespective of position or affiliation, he said.

According to police sources, the clash occurred on Friday afternoon during Saraswati Puja celebrations. Bharatiya Janata Party Kailashahar Mandal president Pritam Ghosh sustained injuries in the incident. The residence of BJP Yuva Morcha district president Arup Dhar was vandalised, and an office of the ruling party in the area was also set on fire.

The situation was brought under control following the deployment of additional police forces, and security has been strengthened in the area to prevent any further disturbance, officials said.

Meanwhile, the DGP said comprehensive security arrangements have been finalised across the State ahead of Republic Day 2026. Additional police deployment has been planned at sensitive locations and venues where Republic Day programmes will be held.

โ€œAll district superintendents of police, subdivisional police officers, officers-in-charge and police stations have been placed on high alert,โ€ he said, adding that coordination with central armed police forces and intelligence agencies has been strengthened.

He said meetings with concerned agencies had already been conducted and a detailed security plan put in place to prevent any untoward incident. Police have appealed to the public to cooperate with security personnel and report any suspicious activity to ensure peaceful Republic Day celebrations.
