The Tripura State Rifles, which played a pro-active role in rooting out militancy from the tiny northeast India state, would be deployed for Haryana elections.

The elite Tripura State Rifles is experienced in similar assignments, and had performed election duties in more than one-dozen states.

The election to the 90-member Haryana Legislative Assembly will be held on October 21. And the results would be declared on October 24.

The Ministry of Home Ministry had requested the Tripura government to send the TSR personnel for the election duty in Haryana.

About 1,000 TSR personnel on Thursday left Agartala by train, and would reach Haryana on Sunday.

The TSR personnel would perform election duties in tandem with the other paramilitary forces, including the CRPF.

Two senior officials — Nabadwip Jamatiya and Biplab Deb – have been assigned to lead the TSR personnel in Haryana.

This is for the first time the TSR personnel would be deployed in Haryana. The highly trained TSR personnel were also part of the security team during the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010.

The TSR was raised in March 1984 to deal with the problem of insurgency in Tripura. About 75 percent of TSR jawans are recruited from Tripura.
