At least six shops were gutted in a fire at Border Golchakkar in Tripura’s Agartala early in the morning on Tuesday.

This was the fourth incident of fire to occur in the city within a month.

The fire is supposed to have been caused by a short circuit in one of the shops.

According to sources, locals spotted the fire around 3 am on Tuesday and informed the fire service.

Locals claimed that the firefighters arrived late on the spot on time, due to which the fire spread wildly.

Agitated local residents reportedly harassed the firefighters after they finally reached the site.

Local MLA Surajit Datta visited the spot on Wednesday afternoon and spoke to the victims affected in the fire.

Sub-divisional magistrate, Ashim Saha also visited the area and provided an initial compensation of Rs 5000 to each of the affected shopkeepers.

Similar incidents of fire had occurred in Radhanagar, Maharajganj Bazar and Math Chowmuhani Market in Agartala in November this year.
