Guwahati: Officials tightened security in some areas along the Indiaโ€“Bangladesh border in Tripura after receiving reports of movement by two Bangladesh-based armed groups on Saturday.

The groups involved are the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS) and the United Peopleโ€™s Democratic Front (UPDF).

According to a notification issued by Gomati district magistrate Rinku Lather, there is a possibility that members of these groups may enter the State along with other Bangladesh nationals and Rohingyas.

The notification warned that such movement could lead to criminal activities, smuggling, and disruption of public peace.

The alert was issued based on intelligence inputs from the Border Security Force.

To maintain law and order, prohibitory measures under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 have been enforced in vulnerable areas.

The order aims to prevent activities that could threaten public safety and security.

A night curfew has been imposed from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. in select border areas under the Karbook Sub-Division of Gomati district.

The restrictions will remain in force until February 28.

However, residents living within 300 metres of the international border have been exempted from the curfew.

Tripuraโ€™s 856-km border with Bangladesh runs through Gomati and Dhalai districts, adjoining the troubled Chittagong Hill Tracts.

Tripura Police took 13 members of the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS) into custody, including two women, on June 13, 2024.

According to officials, the group entered Indian territory for medical treatment after being injured in clashes with a rival organisation in Panchari, in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

Several of them had injuries to their hands and legs, with many already bandaged.
