Based on secret information, the Amtali police under the leadership of sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Tripura Ajay Das raided a house on Thursday evening in the border area behind SIPARD and unearthed a large quantity of cough syrups to be smuggled to Bangladesh.

Talking to the media, SDPO Das said, “On the basis of pinpoint information we launched a search in the house of one Jahar Mia, who was planning to smuggle some narcotics across the border to Bangladesh. But he had absconded and in presence of his wife, we found around 800 bottles of phensedyl hidden in various utensils.”

The seized bottles will cost above Rs 70,000 in the Indian market.

According to information, the cost of phensedyl bottles goes at least five to seven times higher once it reaches across the border.

A case under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 has been lodged at the AD Nagar police station against the owner of the house from where the consignment has been seized.

In October last year, acting on a tip-off, West Tripura district police seized 2590 bottles of banned cough syrup ‘Escuf’ and arrested one person identified as one Prantosh Paul of Bishalgarh.

This was informed by the Superintendent of Police (SP) of West Tripura district, Ajit Pratap Singh.

The consignment was hidden in a car and was moving to be smuggled across the border where it has huge demand and used as substitute to drink.

On the basis of the information provided by the arrested person during interrogation, the police also recovered Rs 6 lakh from his house in Bishalgarh bordering Sepahijala district.

The whole operation was conducted by sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Mohanpur in coordination with the SDPO of Bisalgarh.
