Agartala: The Government of Tripura has suspended regular classes in all schools across the state for a period of five days in view of cold weather conditions.

The schools shall remain schools in between January 06 to January 10, 2026, a social media post of Chief Minister Manik Saha said.

“It has been decided to close all schools(Govt/Govt Aided & Privately managed) from 6th January to 10th January, 2026 due to extreme cold weather conditions,” the post added. Earlier, the Chief Minister said that the state government was contemplating shutting down schools considering the inclement weather conditions.

“I have been waiting for a detailed report from the Metrological Department. Once I have the report, we shall consider declaring school holidays. Apart from the weather, we also have to make sure that the regular studies of the students don’t get hampered for any hasty decision,” the Chief Minister told media persons earlier.

Meanwhile, the mid-day bulletin of the IMD Tripura office said that dry weather conditions are likely to prevail over all districts of Tripura for the next seven days even as dense fog has been forecast for parts of the state during night and early morning hours.

The Met office said no rainfall was recorded anywhere in the state till 8.30 am on Monday. The highest maximum temperature of 23.6 degrees Celsius and the lowest minimum temperature of 10.4 degrees Celsius were both recorded at Kailashahar, with the maximum remaining below normal and the minimum in the normal range.

For the next two days (up to the morning of January 7), dry weather is “very likely” over Tripura, accompanied by shallow to moderate fog at night and in the morning at a few places.  However, dense fog reducing visibility to between 199 and 50 metres is very likely at isolated pockets over West Tripura, Khowai, Sepahijala, Gomati and South Tripura districts during night and morning hours on this two day.

In between January 7 to January 12 next, the forecast indicates continuation of dry weather over all districts with shallow to moderate fog at isolated pockets during night and morning hours. No specific weather warning has been issued for these days.

The maximum temperature over Tripura is likely to remain 4 to 6 degrees Celsius below normal during the next one to three days before witnessing a slight rise. The minimum temperature is not expected to see any large change over the next five days, the Met office added.

The bulletin cautioned that moderate to dense fog could disrupt transport and aviation, affecting operations at airports, highways and railway networks, and increasing the risk of traffic accidents due to poor visibility.
