Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has announced ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh from state government for the family of Kerala custodial death victim Sreejith on Thursday.

Deb, who is in Kerala for campaigning for by-poll, announced the ex gratia during a visit to Sreejith’s residence in Kochi.

Sreejith was allegedly subjected to custodial torture by Kerala police and died while undergoing treatment.

The death of Sreejith sparked off resentment in Kerala.

Sreejith, along with nine others, was taken to custody in connection with a suicide case. But after his death it was found that police had wrongly picked him up taking him as someone else.

Only last week, the Kerala government had announced Rs 10 lakh and a government job for Sreejith’s wife.

Meanwhile, Biplab Kumar Deb proceeded to Chengannur for BJP’s election campaign on Thursday.

Deb is BJP’s star campaigner for the upcoming Chengannur by-polls in Kerala.
