The operation was carried out following specific intelligence inputs on illegal cannabis cultivation.

Agartala: Assam Rifles on Tuesday destroyed an illicit ganja plantation spread across more than 58 acres in the Boxanagar area of Tripuraโ€™s Sepahijala district, officials said.

The operation was carried out following specific intelligence inputs on illegal cannabis cultivation, about 41 km south of Agartala. A column of Assam Rifles conducted the action jointly with the Sepahijala district police, Tripura State Rifles and the Forest Department.

During the coordinated drive, security personnel uprooted and destroyed around 1,45,000 ganja saplings cultivated across multiple plots. The seized crop was estimated to be worth approximately Rs 14.5 crore, according to official assessments.

Officials said the plantation sites were located in forest and adjoining areas, and the destruction was carried out in accordance with legal procedures in the presence of civil administration and police representatives.

No arrests were made during the operation. Further investigation is underway to identify those involved in the cultivation and financing of the illicit crop. Security agencies are also analysing inputs to determine whether the operation is linked to a wider narcotics network operating in the region.

Assam Rifles said such joint operations form part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal drug cultivation and trafficking in Tripura and other parts of the Northeast. The force continues to work closely with state agencies to detect and destroy illicit plantations, particularly in remote and vulnerable areas.

Sepahijala district has witnessed similar anti-narcotics drives in recent years, with security agencies stepping up surveillance and intelligence-based operations to prevent illegal cultivation and movement of narcotic substances.

Further action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation, officials added.
