Several persons including police personnel were injured during clash between BJP and Congress supporters at Bishalgarh in Tripura’s Sepahijala district on Thursday.
A programme was organised at Agartala on the occasion of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s 76th birth anniversary.
Congress supporters from various parts of Bishalgarh were ready to move towards Agartala to join the programme.
But Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists allegedly attacked the vehicle of Congress workers at Bishalgarh on the National Highway asking them to “go back”.
The Congress members planned to go to Agartala under the leadership of Subal Bhowmik to join former PM Rajiv Gandhi’s statue inauguration programme.
But as BJP members allegedly attacked the vehicle of the Congress, police were called.
The police personnel, who rushed to the spot to control the situation, were also injured in attack from BJP activists, sources claimed.
The police resorted to baton-charge in which several BJP workers were injured, sources added.
Later, a group of BJP workers gheraoed the Bishalgarh police station and demanded suspension of the police officials on duty.
They also observed a blockade on the National Highway in front of the Bishalgarh police station.
MP Pratima Bhowmik, who rushed to the spot, said, they have demanded proper investigation into the incident and suspension of the guilty police officer.
She alleged that Congress and police jointly attacked the BJP supporters.
Talking to media, Congress leader Subal Bhowmik said Congress will continue to fight and will not tolerate any attacks by the BJP workers days after days.
The BJP blamed that it was the Congress activists, who attacked their activists while the Congress said the BJP members first attacked their party activists.
