Tripura police on Sunday arrested a constable for allegedly spreading fake information on Facebook about chief minister Biplab Deb’s wife Niti Deb filing ‘divorce suit’ against the chief minister.

The constable, Jamal Hossain, has also been placed under suspension following his arrest.

“Police constable Jamal Hossain was arrested for sharing fake information on social media. He was later suspended from service,” a police officer said.

Hossain is the PSO of opposition CPI-M MLA Islam Uddin.

The Tripura Police had on Friday booked Anupam Paul, a Facebook user, for allegedly sharing fake information on Facebook about a “divorce suit” filed by Niti Deb against her husband and chief minister Biplab Deb in a Delhi court.

Police said investigation into the case is going and hunt is on to nab Paul.

Earlier in the day, chief minister Deb told reporters here that FIRs have been filed against five people in connection with the case.

“Nobody involved in spreading the fake news would be spared,” said Deb.
