The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has relieved Vijaykumar Laxmikantrao Dharurkar from his position as the Vice Chancellor of Tripura University.

The MHRD has taken the step after a video of the VC accepting bribe from a Kolkata-based printing firm for awarding a contract worth Rs 60 lakh went viral.

A senior professor of Tripura University, which is a central university, confirmed it.

However, despite repeated attempts, the PRO of Tripura Central University, Bhaskar Rao Bhonsle, could not be contacted as he did not pick up the call.

It has been reported that the MHRD relieved VL Dharurkar from the position of Vice Chancellor on Saturday.

A senior professor of the university on condition of anonymity said on Friday that the MHRD directed the Vice Chancellor to resign from his post.

“But he did not resign from the position of VC. On Saturday, the MHRD had no option but to relieve him from the position of VC and directed senior professor Sangram Sinha to take charge of the VC,” the professor of Tripura University told Northeast Now.

It may be mentioned that local television channel ‘Vanguard News’ on Thursday aired a news showing the VC negotiating and accepting bribe from a representative of a Kolkata-based printing firm.

Videos were shot in the office chamber of the Vice Chancellor and at the private residence of Surendra Sethia, the representative of the printing firm, in Kolkata.

Dharurkar was allegedly demanding 10 pc of the nearly Rs 60 lakh worth printing work order.

After Tripura University VC Dharurkar caught in a video accepting bribe, the Tripura State Committee of the NSUI demanded his immediate arrest.
