Tripura

Agartala: Security agencies in Tripura have arrested a suspected militant linked to an offshoot of the banned Jamaโ€™atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). The arrest came during a coordinated operation, police confirmed on Tuesday.

Officers identified the accused as 33-year-old Jagir Miah from Jaipur village under West Agartala Police Station in West Tripura district. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, Tripura Police, Assam Police and central intelligence agencies jointly carried out the operation.

Investigators suspect Miah to be associated with Imam Mahamude Kafila, a group believed to be an ideological extension of the proscribed JMB. Meanwhile, agencies have kept the organisation under watch for allegedly radicalising individuals and spreading extremist ideology.

Moreover, officials revealed that Miah allegedly used encrypted digital platforms, including WhatsApp, to stay in touch with members of the extremist network. His online activities reportedly triggered security alerts and prompted swift action.

Police have registered a case under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, along with relevant provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act), 1967.

Currently, authorities have placed him in custody. They are interrogating him to assess his involvement and trace possible associates, including suspected cross-border links. Meanwhile, security forces have intensified surveillance in sensitive areas as the investigation continues.
