New Delhi: Tripura Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb has urged the union civil aviation minister to designate Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) airport in Agartala as an international airport and to expedite the official notification of its immigration check post.

Addressing the Lok Sabha, Tripura MP Biplab Deb stressed on the strategic importance of MBB airport as primary aviation hub in Tripura and a critical gateway for the Northeast region.

He directed his appeal to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, calling for the union civil aviation minister’s intervention.

“In 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new terminal building of MBB airport, which can accommodate 1200 passengers, including both domestic and international travellers,” said Biplab Deb.

The MP from Tripura added: “The facility boasts 20 check-in counters and is equipped with an Instrument Landing System and ground lighting.”

He stated that the Tripura government has invested Rs 18.85 crores to initiate the Agartala-Chittagong flight services and that the ministry of finance had declared the airport a customs check-post on January 04, 2023.

However, he pointed out that the notification from the ministry of home affairs (MHA) regarding the immigration check post is still pending.

He urged the Tripura Speaker to facilitate communication between the civil aviation minister and the MHA to expedite the notification process and prioritize the declaration of MBB airport in Agartala city of Tripura as an international airport.

Deb stated that this upgrade would greatly benefit the people of Tripura and the entire Northeast region.
