AGARTALA: Sacked from his position as the National Students Union of India (NSUI) Tripura president due to what was described as “irresponsible behaviour” in discharging organizational duties, Samrat Roy tendered his resignation from the primary membership of the Congress party on Saturday (February 24).
A significant number of his followers also followed suit.
“I have resigned from my primary membership position of the Indian National Congress party along with many party leaders and workers of the state of Tripura… due to the rising unethical treatment done to our workers and members within the party,” said Roy.
Addressing the media, the former NSUI Tripura president launched fresh criticisms at the Tripura unit of the Congress party, alleging that it is no longer the Congress party but rather a faction known as the “Barman group” is in control.
Accusing the Tripura Congress of being rife with factionalism, Samrat asserted that individuals who once showed disrespect to senior Congress leaders like Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi now hold senior positions within the party.
He expressed his disillusionment with the lack of respect for dedicated workers like himself and his team members.
Samrat highlighted his and his team’s past efforts in advocating for student interests and rights, citing instances where they led movements across Tripura irrespective of political affiliations.
However, he lamented that the present leadership has compromised the party’s ethics and ideologies, leading to their resignation from the primary membership.
When questioned about why he did not resign immediately after being removed from his position as Tripura NSUI chief, Roy explained that he had hoped for positive changes within the party but found the situation deteriorating instead.
Regarding his future plans and the possibility of joining the ruling BJP, Samrat indicated that he has not yet made any decisions and will first consult with his team members, engage in discussions, and then determine his course of action.
