The Centre has released Rs 493 crore as the first instalment of the package for tribal areas development in Tripura.
Tripura chief minister Biplab Deb said that union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman was impressed with the state government’s initiatives for development of tribal areas in the state.
Sitharaman had said the Rs 1300-crore project with World Bank funding would ensure all-round development in the state’s tribal areas.
Notably, tribals form one-third of population in Tripura.
In recent elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), the BJP and its allies were trounced by the newly formed Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA).
Win of TIPRA sent alarm bells ringing for the BJP and its allies about their future electoral prospects in the tribal areas.
