The Bodo students’ body expressed their views against ST status to six communities during the three-day annual convention of the organisation, which was held at Serfanguri in Kokrajhar district.

The ABSU while clarifying its stand said that Clause 6 of the Assam Accord of 1985 in its present form is meant for the Assamese-speaking community alone and therefore it would be acceptable only if rectifications are made at the appropriate level to include safeguarding of all the ethnic and tribal communities of Assam, otherwise it is unacceptable.

The ABSU also resolved that granting ST status to six communities will disturb the rights and privileges of the existing small and marginalised tribal groups under the spirit of the Constitution ST Order 1950 for which any attempt to provide ST status to these six communities is also unacceptable.

In another resolution, the ABSU urged the Government of Assam not to impose Assamese language on the Bodo medium schools of Assam and also for Bodo students studying in other medium schools upto Class- X level.

It urged the government to continue the three-language formula in schools instead of four languages as per the draft National Policy 2019.
