Sensation prevails after a rape accused committed suicide by hanging from a tree next to his house at Lefunga in West Tripura district on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as 28-year-old Shantanu Debbarma.
The daughter-in-law of a 65-year-old woman lodged an FIR with the Lefunga police station alleging that Shantanu raped her mother-in-law.
The incident of rape took place on Tuesday night and the FIR was lodged the next day.
Both the accused and the victim were relatives.
Although the FIR was lodged with the police on Wednesday, the police were not able to arrest the accused and on Thursday morning, he committed suicide.
The officer-in-charge of Lefunga police station said on being informed a police team went to the spot and sent the body of the deceased for conducting post-mortem.
Three more incidents of rape including gang rapes came to light on Wednesday.
In a separate incident at Teliamura, the locals attacked the house of a gang rape accused and the shop owned by him.
A 17-year-old girl was gang-raped by five persons in a car on Tuesday evening while she returning home.
The five accused are still absconding.
On Thursday, a group of people attacked the house of Kasem Mia, who is the main accused in the gang rape case.
They also ransacked his house and shop.
The police of Teliamura police station said they are still searching for the accused.
