One government doctor was terminated and another has been kept under suspension over a lawyer’s unnatural death in Tripura.

On Thursday, the state health department served a termination letter to Dr. Ronit Das and a suspension letter to Dr. Debasish Pal, Tripura health director Subhasish Debbarma informed Northeast Now over the phone.

Bhaskar Debroy, 30, who met with an accident at Dhaleshwar in Agartala on Friday, died at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) on Saturday.

Subhasish Debbarma said Dr. Debasish Pal was the in-charge of the Trauma care centre of GBP Hospital and Dr. Ronit Das was a junior resident officer of the emergency department of the same hospital.

“They did not perform their duties properly on that particular night,” said Debbarma.

The state government has formed a team of investigators with four specialist doctors.

The specialist doctors’ team submitted the report.

“After receiving the report, the state government has taken the steps against the two doctors,” said Debbarma.

“Dr. Ronit Das, a contractual doctor under the state health department, has been served with the termination letter,” he added.

Advocate Pulak Saha filed a PIL in the Tripura High Court regarding the lawyer’s death and brought allegations of medical negligence.

The division bench comprising Chief Justice A.A. Kureshi and Justice Arindam Lodh saw that the post-mortem report filed by the government in the court bears contention of advocate Purushottam Roy Barman.

Speaking to media, advocate Purushottam Roy Barman said nobody in police or hospital had performed their responsibilities to help critically injured lawyer Bhaskar Debroy.

“The NCC police station initially refused to register an FIR sought to be filed by lawyer Pulak Saha and then the lawyers obtained an order from the High Court and the FIR was finally registered on March 7 afternoon,” said Roy Barman.

Tripura chief minister Biplab Kr Deb on Tuesday ordered a magisterial probe and asked to submit the report within 72 hours.

The Tripura CM also visited Bhaskar Debroy’s home and assured his mother of a proper investigation.
