The Tripura government has closed down two border haats along the Indo-Bangla border as precautionary measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The secretary to Tripura health department, Debasis Basu said, “The border haats along the Indo-Bangla border have been closed in accordance with an advisory issued by the Union ministry of health and family welfare (MoHFW).”

Following the issuance of a new advisory by the Centre, the state government also issued a fresh directive to avoid and contain the spread of COVID-19 or novel coronavirus.

“The state government closed down all the border haats through a fresh directive until further order,” said Basu.

There are two border haats along Indo-Bangla border in Tripura. These are located at Srinagar and Kamalasagar.

Meanwhile, the Tripura government has set up four new quarantine camps across the state as measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 or coronavirus.

“If needed more quarantine camps will be set up in the state,” Dr. Radha Debbarma, the nodal officer of state coronavirus protection team, informed Northeast Now on Thursday.

Debbarma said the four quarantine camps have been set up in four districts.

In West district, the quarantine camp has been set up in the newly-constructed building of IGM hospital.

In Khowai district, the camp has been set up in Champahaor Primary Health Centre.

The two other quarantine camps have been set up at Rajbari Primary Health Centre in North Tripura and at Debdaru Primary Health Centre in South Tripura district.

As per the directive, for the time being, immigrants with a suspected case history of suffering from any respiratory symptoms should be assessed properly before their entry into the state and moreover, all the border haats may be closed down for the time being in consultation with Bangladesh authority.

The directives also asked all the district magistrates (DMs) to take necessary steps for conducting sanitization drive at periodical intervals in all buses, terminus, shopping malls and cinema halls.

The DMs have also been directed to carry out awareness generation drive in all public places.

The Tripura chief secretary in a recently held meeting directed the health department to finalise areas where awareness camps can be set up, a highly-placed source in the health and family welfare department said.

Radha Debbarma said, “Till date, there is no case of coronavirus in the state. But, the department is taking all preventive measures to combat any sudden crisis if emerges.”

On being asked regarding a Bangladeshi national not allowed to enter the state, she said, “The person was suffering from high fever. He has been asked to go through all the necessary tests.”
