Guwahati: The Transport Department of Tripura came up with a noble idea and distributed free helmets to the riders of two-wheelers on Friday.
The transport department did this initiative in collaboration with the state-run Tripura Transport Corporation (TRTC).
The distribution of helmets is part of a Road Safety Awareness Week which is aimed to reduce the number of fatal accidents on the state’s roads especially among young two-wheeler riders.
Taking the lead, Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, participated in the programme and distributed helmets to the young riders.
Speaking to reporters, Chowdhury said, “Every year, around 700 to 750 accidents occur in the state, with 200 to 250 of them being fatal, primarily due to head injuries among two-wheeler riders. The programme was designed to promote the use of helmets among riders and pillion passengers, emphasizing the critical role helmets play in protecting lives.”
“In the coming days, we will distribute helmets to the people to save themselves from fatal road accidents. By wearing helmets, they will save their own life and life of their family members,” Chowdhury stated.
Moreover, the Tripura government plans to raise awareness about road safety and the importance of wearing helmets to prevent severe head injuries.
Chowdhury, alongside Superintendent of Traffic Manik Das, handed over helmets to riders and encouraged the youth to adopt this vital safety measure.
Wearing a helmet is not just a legal requirement but a crucial safety practice that can save lives and prevent injuries.
