Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Tuesday laid the foundation stone of five projects in Agartala under the Smart City project coming up at a cost of more than Rs 2000 crore to be equally funded by the Centre and the State Government.

Various projects on applying digital technologies through centralized monitoring, CCTV surveillance system, smart traffic signals, smart LED lighting, development of existing pond, modern digital bus stands, LED boards, digital number plates, Integrated Command and Control Centres (ICCC), free WiFi hotspots, smart solutions for traffic management, transportation, waste management, energy conservation, drainage system, water supplies, GPS (Global Positioning System) and GPRS (General Packet Radio Services), GPS-based buses, smart poles, automatic number plate registration, laying of optical fiber, PAS etc are to be covered under the Smart City project.

The Central Government is providing half of the Rs 2058 crore required for the Smart City projects in Agartala and the State Government has taken Rs 500 crore as loan from the ADB and Hudco (Housing and Urban Development Corporation) to carry out the Rs 1,000 crore Smart City project in Agartala by 2021.

Various dignitaries including MLAs, Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation, chief secretary and chairman Agartala Smart City Limited were present at the foundation stone laying programme.
The Smart Cities Mission is an urban renewal and retrofitting program by the Government of India with an aim to develop 100 cities across the country making them citizen friendly and sustainable.
Agartala got selected as a smart city based on the smart cities challenge, where it competed with several other cities in a countrywide competition to obtain the benefits from this mission.
During early March this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi from New Delhi through video conference digitally launched five Integrated Command and Control Centres (ICCC) of Smart City projects in five cities in three north-eastern states — Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Tripura and which would bring changes in the urban amenities in the north-eastern states and are necessary to boost rapid development.
Under the Smart City projects, 500 projects at a cost of Rs 15,000 crore would be implemented in 10 cities of eight north-eastern states after identifying the existing key problems and the projects are likely to complete by 2021.
