The victim, a mother of two, was tied to a tree, thrashed and humiliated with a garland of shoes put on her neck for allegedly carrying on an illicit relationship with a married neighbour and the video of the ‘lady with her lover (read Sanjit) in a compromising position’ had gone viral in Tripura.

She was punished by the local villagers after the death of Sanjit’s wife as the villagers considered her solely responsible for the wife’s death. The victim said, “They thrashed me because they are under the impression that I am carrying on an extra-marital affair with Sanjit. Seventeen days back there was a row over the whole matter and today, while I was working in the paddy field, a group of villagers came and roughed me up. The villagers allege that I am into a live-in relationship with Sanjit and some of them even bit me. The fact remains that I do not even know this person called Sanjit.”

Sanjit’s father Manoranjan Das revealed that his son was indeed into an “illicit affair” with a lady living in their neighbourhood and “that was the reason why lot of fights take place in our house every day.” Manoranjan further stated, “My son Sanjit and his wife quarreled daily over this ‘affair’ issue and he even physically abused her a lot. Though I am not present at home all the time, others keep me in the know. Sanjit beats her up because his wife caught him red-handed with that lady.”

A village woman Soma Das said that despite Sanjit being the father of two children, he was carrying on an “illicit relationship” with the woman (read who was publicly thrashed). The villagers also held the woman responsible for Sanjit’s wife’s death who passed away a day back in the hospital allegedly due to “severe domestic abuse” by her husband and all because of his “extra-marital affair”.

Another village woman Swapna Das stated, “The root of the problem was that Sanjit wanted to marry that woman (read the victim) and they have been carrying on their affair for the last several years. He is not even ashamed of the fact that one of his daughters is already married.”

Meanwhile, Barnali Goswami, Chairperson of the Tripura Commission for Women, condemned the incident and informed that a team from her office will be visiting the said village followed by another team in the next two days to investigate the entire matter.

Goswami commented that even during the Left Government’s rule “open atrocities were being committed on women and the same trend is being carried on during the present State Government’s time. I am urging the Government to mete out strict punishment to those who take law into their own hands.”
