Dimapur: In a bid to make people financially literate, the office of the principal chief commissioner of income tax, North East Region (NER), Guwahati, on Monday held an interactive outreach programme at the conference hall of Mokokchung deputy commissioner.

Representatives from various NGOs, the business community and entrepreneurs of the Mokokchung district attended the programme.

Addressing the gathering, principal chief commissioner of income tax (NER), Chaitali Panmei, said even if Section 10(26) of the Income Tax Act, 1961 provides for tax exemption to tribal of northeast India, there is a lot to learn about so that the people of the region becomes financially literate.

“Today, we are sowing the seed in Mokokchung but in a few years’ time the people will realise the impact and the importance of the interactive outreach programme held today and how it benefits the people in their endeavour,” she said.

In his address, Mokokchung Deputy Commissioner Thsuvisie Phoji said when it comes to income tax, almost all the people in the region, particularly in the Mokokchung district are illiterate.

He said the programme is an eye opener and added that what was learnt today would surely enlighten and benefit the people of the district in days to come.

Welcoming the officials of the income tax department led by its principal chief commissioner to the district, Phoji expressed his gratitude to the department for taking all the trouble in organising such a programme in the district.
