Within an hour of the low-intensity blast on Saturday at Panbazar in downtown Guwahati, ULFA commander-in-chief Paresh Baruah claimed responsibility. But, why is the ULFA so desperate for a bomb explosion on a second Saturday and that too, on the festive Durga Puja season?

Paresh Baruah reportedly called up television channels in Guwahati to claim responsibility for the blast. The ULFA, which is fighting for Sunor Axom (a Golden Assam), reportedly claimed that the bomb was detonated in Guwahati to register its protest against the BJP government’s move to grant citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshi refugees.

Questions are being raised in conscious circle as to what will Paresh Baruah gain by triggering such kind of blast in its so called ‘battle’ against powerful Indian machinery when almost 90 per cent of the ULFA leaders led by Anup Chetia had surrendered and in a peace mode?

In the year 2004, on the Independence Day, the outfit triggered blast at Dhemaji parade ground killing 13 people including ten school children. It was a turning point as the outfit rapidly lost its base in Assam. Though later some of the ULFA leaders tendered apology for the ‘mistake’, people neither forgive the outfit nor forget the incident.

Saturday’s low-intensity blast appears to be a desperate bid by the outfit to prove its existence. But this time also it backfired. Social media is buzz with posts against the outfit. ““Terror and terrorist”…….Whatever be your methods we have stopped living in FEAR. You don’t need to do Cheap acts to make us feel your EXISTENCE,” an FB post said.

“What did you gain by detonating a blast and injuring people? It will only damage Assam’s image once again. Forgot the Dhemaji episode?’” another social media post said.
