Sikkim runs a mile on Olympic Day Run 2018

The Olympic Day Run 2018 was organized in Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim on Saturday.

The run was organized by Sikkim Olympic Association under the aegis of Indian Olympic Association and International Olympic Committee.

The run witnessed participation of members of various sporting associations of Sikkim and students from schools within Gangtok.

The run was flagged-off by Gangtok MLA Pintso Chopel Lepcha at around 7 am in the morning.

The route of the race was drawn around Gangtok.

It started off at Titanic Park, went up to Zero Point, from there it stretched to Duki Pan Dokan and then moved downward towards Titanic Park where the run ended.

Ram Bahadur Neopaney won the men’s event, while Chandra Kala Sharma stood first in the women’s category.

Anup Baniya clinched gold in the senior men’s category.

Notably, Nawang Lhamu, aged 70 years, bagged the gold in the senior women’s category.

The sub-junior category witnessed Arnab Sharma and Shreya Rai bag gold and silver respectively.

Seven-year-old Chultim Bhutia, the youngest in the lot, secured the bronze medal.

Olympic Day was first started in 1987, and over the years it has grown much more than just a sports event.

It is a day for the world to get active, learn about Olympic values and discover new sports.

The theme of the event this year was ‘Move, Learn and Discover’.

The Olympic Day Run also marked the beginning of the Olympic Week celebrations.

The event aims at promoting unity and a healthy life, according to the Sikkim Olympic Association.
