A doctor of the cardiology department of the STNM Hospital in Gangtok – capital of Sikkim – was stabbed by a “random person” on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident took place at around 1pm on Tuesday.

Apart from the doctor, a sanitary attendant, was also stabbed by the accused.
The accused has been identified as 42-year-old Tshering Bhutia.
The condition of the doctor is reported to be ‘critical’.

The doctor has been identified as Dr Sanjay Upreti.
The reason for the assault on the doctor has not been ascertained.
However, it is believed that the accused must have been a patient earlier or relative of a patient.
The sanitary attendant, who was also stabbed by the accused had sustained injuries while trying to save the doctor.
Meanwhile, Sikkim police have arrested the accused and investigation into the case has been launched.
“Angry with girlfriend who refused to talk to him while she was at hospital in Sikkim’s Gangtok to attend to a sick relative, man goes on stabbing spree, attacked doctor and sanitation attendant,” Police informed.
