The 11th Battalion of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) based in Pegong near Chungthang in North Sikkim observed ‘Save the environment week’ from April 27 to May 4 as part of Swachha Bharat Mission.

In a press release issued in Gangtok, the ITBP said the observation was held under the leadership of Rajesh Kumar Tomar, the commandant of the battalion.

The main aim of the event, it said, was to keep the unit and its surroundings, including the forward posts located at a height of 17,000 feet and above neat and clean.

During the cleanliness drive, waste materials were disposed according to their classifications and the materials that can be re-used will be repaired and put in future use.

“All the garbage collected will be disposed in separate areas marked as biodegradable and non- biodegradable. Action is also being taken to convert biodegradable waste into manure,” stated the release.

The release further stated that the battalion commander regularly organizes such drives and all the barracks, mess, office, stores are regularly cleaned by the members of the unit.

“The civil administration and the local population are happy with the initiative of ITBP because of which the beauty of the villages of Pegong and Chungthang can be enhanced,” the release added.
