In a bid to curb the menace of open defecation and to ensure the Gyalshing Municipality’s preparedness for declaring itself as open defecation free municipality, a public toilet constructed by the Urban Development & Housing Department was formally handed to Gyalshing Municipal Council recently. The toilet, built under the “Bazaar Beautification Project” of NLCPR funded by the DoNER Ministry  was handed over by SE (S/W) to the Municipal Executive Officer in the presence of Chairman, Deputy Chairman and Councillors of Gyalshing Municipal Council, as well as State Mission Director, Swachh Bharat (Urban) who visited the Municipality to oversee the handing-over event.

During the interaction that followed, the Mission Director, Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), YD Yongda impressed upon the ULB to accelerate the pace of Individual Household toilet coverage as well as implementation of Solid Waste DPRs. She stressed upon need for the maintenance and sustenance of the Public Toilet. She also took stock of the “source segregation” status of garbage which would ensure segregated waste collection whereby every household, institution and commercial establishment must mandatorily segregate their Wet and Dry waste.

With the Council’s ownership of the Public Toilet, it will be run on a “Pay and Use” model, thereby generating revenue for the ULB, the services of which are going to be outsourced. The toilet which has 6 urinals and 6 water closets with hand washing facilities and separate provisions for ladies and gents is targeted to cater to general public, tourists, and is expected to have maximum usage on Haat days.
