Sikkim football has added another feather to its cap with the inclusion of local footballer Bikash Jairu among 30 players called for the Indian football team’s preparatory camp for the upcoming Hero Intercontinental Cup.

The 28-year-old hails from Geyzing in West District and plays as a left winger both for the country and club.

Jairu is presently in his home state for a month-long break after playing for Jamshedpur FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2018 and Super Cup 2018.

He has played for India in more than 10 international matches and was an integral part of the national team during the AFC Asian Cup qualifying round last year.

Notably, Jairu is also the first Sikkimese footballer to score a goal in the ISL.

He earned this unique distinction on February 1 early this year when he came in as a substitute to score the winner for Jamshepur FC against Mumbai City in Mumbai with only six minutes left for the final whistle.

Jairu is in contract with Jamshedpur FC for two more seasons. He is scheduled to leave for Mumbai on May 16 to join the national team camp.

The Hero Intercontinental Cup tournament will feature India, Kenya, New Zealand and Chinese Taipei and the tournament is taking place in Mumbai from June 1.
