The main accused in the sensational Sheena Bora murder case, Indrani Mukherjea was refused her request of undergoing a polygraph or lie-detector test by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday.

Mukherjea had requested taking a polygraph test last month and had submitted a two-page handwritten application in this regard, according to reports.

The CBI on Monday said that polygraph test were not admissible in the court of law and with 35 witnesses having already been examined by the prosecution in the court, it was not required anymore.

Mukherjea had refused to take the test in 2015, the year when she was arrested along with her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna and a driver Shyamvar Pinturam Rai, for allegedly abducting and killing Sheena Bora and subsequently burning her corpse.

Mukherjea, had stated in her application that in the year 2015, she was mentally, emotionally and physically disturbed and was under tremendous pressure not to undergo the test.

She also stated that now she is much better and should be allowed to undergo the test in the name of justice.

During a polygraph test, some sensors are attached to a person which records his/her breathing rate, pulse, blood pressure, perspiration etc.

When the polygraph test starts, the questioner asks three or four simple questions to establish the norms for the person’s signals. Then the real questions being tested by the polygraph are asked.

A polygraph examiner can establish whether a person is lying by examining the graphs and checking whether the vital signs like blood pressure, pulse etc changed significantly on any of the questions.
