A teacher of a missionary school in Gossaigaon block of Kokrajhar district against whom a case of sexual assault on six girl children was lodged, surrendered before police on Saturday.

The accused, identified as Safiur Rahman, is also the Gossaigaon district president of All BTAD Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU).

He is a science teacher at Synod English Mission School, a private school, located in Gossaigaon.

After a case was lodged against him on October 4, 2018, Rahman had been absconding for the last two weeks.

Sources said, “Six girl students of the school complained that the teacher had sexually harassed each of them when he was taking oral test of Class VI in the school on October 4, 2018 taking advantage of the situation.”

The sexually abused girl students along with their parents lodged a case in Simalutapu Police Outpost on October 7, 2018 against accused Safiur Rahman.

The police failed to arrest Rahman immediately after the registration of the case as he had fled after committing the crime.

A case (No 423/2018) has been registered under sections 342/506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) R/w sec 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

But as the victims’ families pressurized the ABMSU leadership and the police, Safiur Rahman was compelled to surrender before police in Gossaigaon Police Station on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the central committee of the ABMSU has decided to suspend Safiur Rahman from the post of Gossaigaon district committee president during an emergency meeting of the Union on Saturday after he surrendered before police.

The decision of the ABMSU’s central committee was conveyed to media persons by the Union’s Gossaigaon district committee’s general secretary during a press briefing on Saturday.
