Due to the lackluster attitude of the administration, the Bru refugee repatriation has witnessed a massive set back in Mizoram.

The refugees refused returning to their land and staged protest at the entrance of Kanchanpur sub division at Ashapara.

Although the administration was aware of their protest programme but did not take any proper arrangements for conducting the repatriation programme successfully.

As per the ongoing repatriation programme more numbers of refugees were scheduled to leave for Mizoram from Naisinghpara camp.

But the refugees staged demonstration at Ashapara, displayed black flag and denied boarding bus for going to Mizoram.

The refugees stated that they will go to Mizoram only if their demands are being fulfilled.

The demands that the Bru refugees have made to go back to Mizoram include:

  • To re-arrange the resettlement areas and those areas must form into new villages
  • To give liberty to every family, to choose their respective resettlement areas in any part of the district in Mamith, Kolashib and Lunglei
  • To accept and grand the same repatriation package to the families those who were evicted from Mizoram in 2009
  • To reconsider the left out family who have not yet been identified due to non availability of EPIC of Mizoram
  • To conduct the spot verification process of the proposed resettled areas by government of Mizoram and camp leaders along with the guardians of each family
  • Construction of dwelling houses must be granted prior to the repatriation starts
  • To deposit the one time cash assistance to every individual bank account in the name of the head of the family
  • To deploy CAPF for protection of repatriated families and create SPO in the pattern of Tripura by recruiting 70 per cent from Bru youths
  • To create an autonomous district council for the Bru community under the article number 244 (2) and 275(1) under the 6th Schedule of Indian Constitution

Along with these demands the Bru refugees staged demonstration.
