The Kaziranga National Part authorities have planned to organize ‘Rhino Population Estimation 2018’ in Kaziranga National Park from March 25 to March 28, 2018.

This has been stated in a notification issued by the Director of the Kaziranga National Park, Akash Deep Baruah.

Due to the rhino population estimation, the Jeep safari will remain closed in Kaziranga Range, Kohora; Western Range, Bagori; Burapahar Range, Ghorakati Range on March 26 and in Eastern Range, Agoratoli the Jeep safari will remain closed on March 27, 2018, as per the notification.

“Elephant safari shall remain dosed for the visitors with effect from March 26 to March 28, 2018 in all the permitted tourist zones of the Park. The Park authorities shall not be liable for any losses or damages caused because of this closur,” Kaziranga National Park Director Baruah stated through the notification.

According to information, on March 26, in the later period, rhino estimation will be conducted in 44 compartments on March 26 on the southern bank of Diphalo river flowing through Kaziranga National Park and in 36 compartments on the northern bank of the river on March 27. The estimation will be conducted with elephants.

During the estimation, the official, who will count the rhinos, will be assisted by an armed forest guard.

On March 28, after the main estimation, in some selected compartments a special samle will be estimated.

After March 28, collecting all the figures from all the compartments, the total figures of the rhinos will be counted and the final count for 2018 will be finalized.

The rhino estimation process will be joined by various officials of the Forest department, representatives of different NGOs and media persons.

It may be mentioned that in 2013, in Kaziranga National Park, total 2329 rhinos were found and in 2015, a total of 2401 rhinos were found. Now rhinos in the Park are counted in every two years.
