A police man was killed and another was critically injured when the motorcycle, on which they were travelling, collided with a Mercedes car belonging to Meghalaya Health Minister AL Hek’s son in Shillong in the wee hours on Saturday.

As per information, the incident took place at a tri-junction at Fourth Furlong in Polo here at around 12.45 am.

The Mercedes car, bearing a temporary registration No AS01-TC-279, was driven by Hek’s son, 28-year-old Aibansharai Nongsiej.

According to police, the rider of the Pulsar motorcycle (No ML 05-J-0913), 38-year-old Probin D Sangma, a guard at the Shillong district jail, was declared brought dead at the Shillong Civil Hospital.

The pillion rider, Probat R Marak, who is also a police constable of the 1st Battalion Meghalaya Police, was critically hurt.

Critically injured Marak has been shifted from Shillong Civil Hospital to North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) on Saturday.

Police said, the deceased police man hailed from Tikrikilla in Garo Hills.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Davis NR Marak said that investigation is on and it is yet to ascertain whose fault was it.

He said that no one has been arrested in this regard.

“We have taken the statement of Nongsiej, but the statement from the injured person has not been recorded,” he said, adding that medical reports are also awaited.

Meanwhile, Hek said it was a fact that the car driven by his son met with an accident and called for a free and fair investigation.

Hek said that he was also in Shillong Civil Hospital the whole night with the injured person.

“Accident is an accident. But as a minister, I want to see a fair investigation and whoever committed the wrong, should be punished according to law,” Hek said.

Conveying his condolence to the family members of the police man, who died in the accident, Hek said that he would also meet the family members when they arrive in Shillong from Garo Hills.
