Dimapur: The ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDDP) has announced former minister and doctor-turned-politician Dr Chumben Murry as the consensus candidate of the People’s Democratic Alliance to contest in Nagaland’s lone Lok Sabha seat in the upcoming general elections.

Tokheho Yepthomi of the NDPP is the incumbent Lok Sabha MP from the state.

The NDDP took the decision at its parliamentary board meeting at the party headquarters in Kohima on Friday, the party’s media and communication committee said in a release on Saturday.

Chaired by NDPP Parliamentary Board convenor and chief minister Neiphiu Rio and co-chaired by NDPP president Chingwang Konyak, the meeting also deliberated on the forthcoming elections to the Lok Sabha and the necessary preparations to be undertaken to face the ensuing elections.

The party appealed to all sections of the people and all the political parties to continue to extend support to the PDA government and the PDA consensus candidate in the forthcoming elections. 

The NDPP, along with BJP and other parties, is running the coalition government in the state.

Expressing its appreciation to all the political parties and leaders who are part of the opposition-less government in the state and are extending support to the leadership of the chief minister and the PDA government, the party extended gratitude to the alliance partner BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, home minister Amit Shah and BJP national president JP Nadda for the support extended to the state government and maintaining the positive spirit of the alliance.

Though Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee president Supongmeren Jamir last month said the Congress would contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, the party is yet to declare its candidate.

Once the party announces its candidate, the Lok Sabha poll in the state is most likely to witness a two-cornered contest.
