Dimapur district of Nagaland recorded the highest number of criminal cases among the 11 districts of the State from 2013 till June 30, 2018, according to a crime data of Nagaland Police headquarters (PHQ).

Longleng district reported the lowest number of cases.

Out of the 5785 crimes registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC) in the State during the period, Dimapur district alone accounts for 3250 cases. This is more than the total number of cases registered in other 10 districts of the State.

As per the PHQ data, the district accounted for 551 IPC cases in 2013, 510 in 2014, 510 in 2014, 658 in 2015 700 in 2016, 575 in 2017 and 256 till June 30, 2018.

The crime heads included murder, attempt to murder, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rape, kidnapping and abduction, dacoity, robbery, burglary, theft, criminal breach of trust, cheating, forgery, counter feting, extortion, rioting and other IPC crimes.

Out of these, theft cases topped the chart with the highest 301 cases registered in 2016. While crime on ‘riot’ witnessed the least with just seven cases – two cases in the year 2014, four in 2015 and one in 2017.

Except for 2015, no criminal cases under culpable homicide not amounting to murder were registered in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018. There were 15 cases registered under ‘dacoity’ from 2013 to 2015.

According to the data, the extortion cases in the district have increased considerably till June 30 this year with 67 cases registered. The year 2013 witnessed the lowest reports with 62 extortion cases while there were 71 cases in 2014, 84 in 2015, 79 in 2016 and 81 in 2017.

Murder cases registered in 2013 were 37, 23 in 2014, 27 in 2015, 10 in 2016, 18 in 2017 and six till June this year.

The year 2013 saw 27 kidnapping and abduction cases, 23 in 2014, 68 in 2015, 78 in 2016 (the highest since 2013 till June 30, 2018), 47 in 2017 and 13 till June this year.

With an area of 927 square km, one of the lowest among the districts in the state area wise, Dimapur district has a population of over 3.8 lakh according to the 2011 census.

The commercial of Nagaland earned the dubious reputation of being the ‘crime capital’ of the State.
