Dimapur: Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav has called for improving access to welfare schemes for persons with disabilities by organising block- and village-level camps for issuing disability certificates in coordination with the Health and Family Welfare Department.
The proposal was discussed during a review meeting with the Social Welfare Department at Lok Bhavan, where Director Tosheli Zhimomi briefed the Governor on the implementation of key welfare programmes.
Officials reviewed flagship schemes under the Ministry of Women and Child Development, including Saksham Anganwadi & Poshan 2.0, Mission Vatsalya and Mission Shakti, with discussions focusing on nutrition, child protection and women’s empowerment.
The meeting also reviewed initiatives for senior citizens and persons with disabilities under various central schemes, along with the functioning of child protection mechanisms such as Child Welfare Committees and Juvenile Justice Boards.
While appreciating the department’s efforts, the Governor stressed the need for stronger implementation, greater public awareness and improved inter-departmental coordination to ensure benefits reach intended beneficiaries effectively.
In a separate meeting, Yadav reviewed the state’s preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season amid concerns over flash floods, landslides and erratic rainfall patterns.
Officials informed the Governor that Nagaland is expected to receive normal to above-normal rainfall this year despite the possibility of El Niño conditions.
Departments presented district-level preparedness plans, including the setting up of control rooms, deployment of machinery and identification of vulnerable locations.
The Public Works Department said major highways were being closely monitored and alternative routes had been identified to maintain connectivity during emergencies.
The Kohima district administration also outlined measures including formation of task forces, traffic management plans, medical preparedness and ensuring the availability of essential commodities.
The Governor directed all departments to remain vigilant, strengthen emergency response mechanisms and improve dissemination of information to minimise disruption during the monsoon season.
