The Confederation of Chang Students’ Union on Monday locked the offices of district education officer and sub-divisional education officer in Nagaland’s Tuensang.

The union said it would not allow to open the offices till its demands are met.

The union said it shut the two offices after failing to get any response from the state’s education department to act on an ultimatum served by it on February 5 within 10 days. The union had asked the department for immediate retention of downgraded government high schools at Chingmei and Noksen.

Sources in the union on Monday said the department assured to give a written assurance by evening but it is yet get any assurance on the matter.

According to the union, repeated poor High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) exam results had prompted the union to collaborate with the district education office in Tuensang to launch the ‘mission zero% free’ project. Under this project, the union has adopted the high schools for three years to help achieve the objective of eliminating practice of schools failing to register any successful candidates in the HSLC exams, it stated.

Union vice president W.B. Mongko the union submitted a memorandum to the education department on November 27, 2017 after the government issued the order to downgrade Government High School Chingmei and Government High School Noksen not to implement the order. He said the department gave a verbal assurance to the union to look into the matter and directed it to take admissions for the academic year 2018. However, three students from GHS Chingmei were found ineligible to sit for their HSLC examination at the time of filling up forms for the exams.

Stating that the futures of these students are destroyed, the union said it will not accept any verbal assurance and the lockdown will continue until retention of the downgraded schools to their original status.
