Mizoram’s opposition party, Zoram People’s Movement’s (ZPM) vice president, Dr. Kenneth Chawngliana, lambasted the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) on Monday, saying it is backsliding even after ruling the State for over 10 months now.

Addressing a political session at ZPM office in Aizawl, Chawngliana said,“Mizoram is moving backward in terms of development within 10 months after the MNF came to power.”

He alleged, “The MNF government headed by chief minister, Zoramthanga, has not only failed to implement, but also, abandoned its poll promises to distribute Rs three lakh each to every household through its flagship programme, the Socio-Economic Development Policy (SEDP).”

Chawngliana blamed the government for renaming the State’s premier medical college, Mizoram Institute of Medical Education Research (MIMER) to Zoram Medical College (ZMC).

“Almost all the newly established medical institutions were designed to be research centres of the highest standards. MIMER was also designed by the previous government to be a research centre in the future, but, the MNF government reduced it to only a graduate level medical college,” said, ZPM’s vice president.

Chawngliana furthertaking a dig at the government, said, “The border dispute between Mizoram and Assam, is unlikely to be resolved during the present MNF rule, as, a mosque and a forest beat office have been constructed on the disputed land at Zophai and near Vairengte by Assam, after the MNF came to power.”

The ZPM leader also accused the MNF government of snatching away the power of Mizoram Public Service Commission (MPSC) by establishing a sub-ordinate recruitment body in order to recruit police and give other government jobs through this body.

“The MNF recruited over 100 police constables to favour its party members during its previous rule, but, majority of the policemen have died due to them falling prey to alcohol addiction,” he said.
