Guwahati: Mizoram has won a special award for its remarkable achievements in traffic management at the 18th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference held recently in Gurugram, Haryana.
The recognition was announced through an official statement.
During the valedictory session, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal and Minister of State Tokhan Sahu presented the award to Lalmalsawma Pachuau, Secretary of the Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) Department.
The UMI Conference, organised every year by the Institute of Urban Transport (India) under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), provides a national platform to encourage smart, eco-friendly, and inclusive urban transport practices across the country.
As part of the selection process, Mizoram’s Town and Country Planning Wing under the UD&PA Department was asked to present its traffic initiatives to the award committee.
The department submitted a detailed presentation and video on October 16, showing the state’s creative methods for improving urban traffic flow.
The presentation highlighted the citizens’ discipline in following road rules, smooth traffic despite narrow roads, and the efficient coordination of the traffic management committee.
It also mentioned Aizawl’s reputation as the “Silent City” because of residents’ unique habit of avoiding unnecessary honking.
The Mizoram government dedicated the award to its people, appreciating their cooperation, civic awareness, and respect for road safety.
Officials also thanked various departments and organisations for working together to achieve this recognition.
Mizoram’s road discipline has often been admired on social media and by many public figures, including former President Ram Nath Kovind.
The capital, Aizawl, is popularly known as the “No Honking City” of India, symbolising its citizens’ calm and courteous driving behaviour.
In Aizawl, a distinct traffic system is followed. Four-wheelers keep left, two-wheelers stay to the right, and overtaking is strictly avoided even in congested areas.
Mizoram’s disciplined driving practices reflect the state’s effective and well-coordinated traffic management practices.
