Aizawl: Mizoram has inaugurated a new de-addiction and rehabilitation centre at Sethawn in Kolasib district, with Social Welfare Minister Lalrinpuii calling for stronger cooperation between churches and the government to tackle the stateโ€™s drug problem.

The Jordan Centre has been entrusted to the Mizoram Synod for 15 years under a memorandum of understanding signed with the state government in March this year. The facility was formally inaugurated and dedicated to God at a function on Tuesday.

The event was attended by Social Welfare Minister Lalrinpuii and Mizoram Synod Moderator Rev John Raldosanga.

Speaking at the inauguration, Lalrinpuii said the high prevalence of drug addiction in Mizoram remained a serious concern. She described churches as an important force in the fight against drug abuse, while noting that the government and voluntary organisations would continue to provide support.

The minister said efforts to combat drugs could no longer focus solely on reducing the supply of narcotics, adding that the Social Welfare Department was increasingly concentrating on demand reduction and rehabilitation.

She also cautioned pharmacy owners against violating licensing conditions in the sale of medicines, warning that licences could be cancelled if businesses were found breaching the law.

Lalrinpuii expressed hope that the partnership between the government and the Mizoram Synod would continue beyond the initial 15-year agreement and assured continued government support for the initiative.

According to Jordan Centre Director Rev Lalrinmawia, the facility can accommodate 70-80 people under its de-addiction programme and around 150 people through its after-care and skill-training programme.

The centre will therefore function not only as a rehabilitation facility but also as a vocational and skill-development centre, he said.

The monthly fee has been fixed at Rs 3,000, while the Mizoram Synod will cover the cost for individuals who are unable to afford the fee.

The Jordan Centre is the third rescue home operated by the Mizoram Synod.

Admissions opened on October 7, with residents expected to begin arriving at the centre from October 20.
