Ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) adviser and rural development minister Lalruatkima on Friday said that his party has fulfilled many promises it has made in its election manifesto, including renovation of dilapidated roads across the state, in just two and a half years.

The leader’s remarks came at a time when people of Chawngte in south Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district are staging a strike in protest against the poor condition of the road connecting their town.

Addressing a campaign kickoff program for the upcoming Tuirial bypoll at Thingdawl town, Lalruatkima claimed that the MNF has fulfilled many of its promises made in the manifesto before the last assembly polls.

“We have imposed a total ban on alcohol soon after we formed government, altered school timing, increase the old-age pension by double, and repaired and improve road conditions across the state,” he said.

He claimed that the government also resumed the provision of sugar to BPL families through the public distribution system and solved the cooking gas crisis.

Citing that development has many things to with having a legislator from the ruling party, he appealed to people to vote for the MNF nominee in the upcoming by-poll to Tuirial seat, which is due on October 30.

Lalruatkima also said that the state government, local volunteers and churches have collectively combat the Covid-19 pandemic, which greatly affected the state.

Meanwhile, the people of Chawngte under the aegis of a road monitoring committee on Friday organised a strike on government offices, commercial banks and other government establishments in protest against the government inaction to repair Chhumkhum – Chawngte road linking the town.

The protesters also demanded the resignation of three MLAs- Dr. BD Chakma of BJP from Tuichawng constituency,  C. Ngunlianchunga (Cong) from Lawngtlai West constituency and  MNF legislator from Lunglei South Dr. K. Pachhunga for paying indifference to the plight of the people.
