Residents of Dumzau village participating in the cleanliness drive conducted by Assam Rifles

The Lunglei Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles on Saturday educated residents on the management of solid wastes during a cleanliness drive at Dumzau village in Lawngtlai district of Mizoram.

The cleanliness drive was conducted with the aim of motivating the local public to keep their surroundings clean.

About 20 local residents and 25 Assam Rifles jawans came together to clean the area around the Dumzou village.

The villagers were also educated on the need to segregate waste before dumping them as most of the waste matters are non-biodegradable in nature and immensely pollute the environment.

Non-Biodegradable wastes like plastics clog the drains and also pollute water bodies.

There are no proper waste management plants in Mizoram to treat the huge quantities of solid wastes generated from households and business establishments every day.

The Assam Rifles had also conducted a similar cleanliness drive called ‘Clean Lunglei, Green Lunglei’ at Lunglei district on Friday.

The drive was done in keeping with the Centre’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
