Aizawl: The Mizoram government will impose a blanket ban on firecrackers, sky lanterns and other pyrotechnic materials during the coming festive season, home minister K. Sapdanga said on Monday.
Addressing a function at the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) party office in Aizawl, Sapdanga said that the government will take stringent actions against those government employees involved in transporting and bursting firecrackers and other fireworks.

He said that the government would completely ban firecrackers, sky lanterns, fireworks and other pyrotechnic materials during Christmas and New Year.
The home minister also said that the state government will alert all units of police and night patrolling will be conducted in towns and villages to ensure peaceful celebrations of Christmas and New Year.
He said that the government will also work with civil society organisations to ensure a peaceful atmosphere during the festive season.

In the past too, Mizoram used to ban firecrackers, sky lanterns and other pyrotechnic materials, including toy guns, during the festive season to avoid pollution and to mark the sanctity of Christmas and New Year.
Similarly, firecrackers and other pyrotechnic materials were banned during festivals of other religious groups in the state.
Mizoram is preparing for grand celebrations of Christmas and New Year this year.
