Aizawl: At least four people from Assam were arrested in Aizawl on Monday in connection with a series of vehicle thefts, police said.

The accused were identified as Zakaria Ahmed (19), Noor Ahmed (19), Babul Hussain (19) and Junil Hussain (19), from Karimganj and Patharkandi districts of Assam and currently staying in the Durtlang area of Aizawl.

Police said the arrests followed an investigation into a two-wheeler theft case registered at Bawngkawn police station on Sunday. During sustained interrogation, the suspects were found to be involved in multiple vehicle theft cases.

According to police, the accused confessed that some of the stolen motorcycles were sold in Silchar in Assamโ€™s Cachar district.

During the recovery of a stolen motorcycle from the Zuangtui area on Monday, police also recovered two additional motorbikes that had been stolen by the group during the intervening night between Sunday and Monday.

The accused were remanded to police custody for 72 hours, and their forward linkages are being investigated, police said, adding that efforts are under way to recover the remaining stolen vehicles.
