Aizawl: In a landmark development for Mizoram’s youth, Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Thursday formally inaugurated the National Cadet Corps (NCC) Mizoram Group Headquarters at his office.
The move marks a historic administrative shift, ending Mizoram’s long-standing dependence on the Assam NCC wing and enabling the state to function under its own independent NCC Group Headquarters.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Sports and Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar, Major General Anurag Vij, Additional Director General (ADG) of NCC for the North Eastern Region, and Brigadier GS Arora, Commander of the Aizawl Group Headquarters.
Interacting with NCC officials after the inauguration, Lalduhoma reiterated his government’s commitment to establishing a dedicated headquarters for the state. He said the initiative rests on two key objectives—protecting youth from the growing drug menace by providing a structured and disciplined environment, and offering a competitive platform for talented Mizo youth to showcase their abilities at the national level.
“We strongly feel the need to shield our youth from the escalating drug crisis. We want them to join the NCC with enthusiasm and use it as a foundation for a disciplined and purposeful life,” the Chief Minister said.
Major General Anurag Vij reaffirmed the NCC’s mission of grooming responsible and productive citizens. He observed that while youth from the Northeast are exceptionally talented, some face hesitation or lack confidence when interacting with peers from other parts of the country. The new headquarters, he said, would help bridge this gap by increasing national exposure and fostering confidence through inter-state interaction.
Vij added that the NCC is ready to begin construction of permanent infrastructure once the state government allots land on a long-term lease.
He also noted that the NCC has consistently played a vital role in guiding youth away from immoral behaviour and substance abuse, while shaping them into responsible members of society.
During the meeting, Lalduhoma and NCC officers discussed potential sites for the headquarters, with officials reiterating their readiness to commence construction once land is made available.
According to officials, Mizoram currently has around 8,000 active NCC cadets across four units. With the establishment of the dedicated Group Headquarters, enrolment is expected to rise significantly. The administrative transition is also expected to streamline training operations and expand opportunities for students across all districts of the state.
