The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will soon announce the name of its candidate for the ensuing bypoll to Serchhip Assembly seat, said Mizoram BJP president Vanlalhmuaka.
Addressing a meeting at the BJP office in Aizawl on Monday, Vanlalhmuaka said the party has already selected a candidate for the upcoming bypoll, which would soon be officially announced under the supervision of party leadership at the centre.
Without naming the candidate, the Mizoram BJP president on Monday exuded hope that his party would win the bypoll.
The bypoll to Serchhip seat was necessitated by the disqualification of incumbent legislator Lalduhoma under the anti-defection law in November last year.
The bypoll due this year is yet to be notified.
Vanlalhmuaka said the BJP has set up party blocks and units across Serchhip Assembly constituency.
“The people of Mizoram have lost faith in the present and previous state governments. The people of Serchhip will soon know that the BJP is firm in its promises,” he said.
He said his party would make massive efforts so that the dream of establishing “Zoram Thar” (New Mizoram) becomes a reality.
The BJP president said the party has strongly believed in the maxim that the poor and the downtrodden also receive their share properly.
A BJP leader said the party has projected former state spokesperson Lalhriatrenga Chhangte alias Hriata Chhangte for the upcoming bypoll.
Chhangte, who was brought up in Serchhip, had contested the Lok Sabha polls in 2019 and lost to Mizo National Front (MNF) nominee C. Lalrosanga.
The ruling MNF had earlier nominated party vice president and former Lok Sabha member and ex-MLA Vanlalzawma for the Serchhip bypoll while main opposition Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) has tipped party leader and disqualified MLA Lalduhoma to retain his seat.
Congress has projected party leader PC Laltlansanga.
