Guwahati: Republican Party of India (RPI) Athawale national secretary Thounaojam Maheshwar has demanded the governments at the centre and state use central forces to evict illegal settlements from the Churachandpur-Khoupum Protected Forest areas of Manipur bordering Myanmar and Mizoram on the south-west.

Talking to the newsmen at Imphal, the actor-turned-politician from Imphal expressed “unhappiness” over the statement of the Mizo Students’ Union (MSU) where they warned Meitei community’s expulsion from Mizoram in case any Kuki-Zo people from Manipur were deported to Mizoram.

Criticising the statement issued by MSU, and claiming that such a sectarian stand of the Union testifies nexus with militants posing a grave threat to national security and integration, Thounaojam Maheshwar said that the state government should write to the Ministry of Home Affairs to initiate an enquiry into the activities of the MSU.

The development comes after Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh informed about his government’s intention to identify and deport those who settled in the state after 1961.

The MSU cautioned the Manipur government that if they proceed with the declaration and deport any Mizo or Kuki-Zo people to Mizoram, residents of Meitei in the state would also face deportation to Manipur. The student body also mentioned that they have compiled a comprehensive list of all Meitei individuals residing in Mizoram.
